Oakland University was created in 1957 when the heiress to the Dodge automaker fortune, Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband, lumber baron Alfred Wilson, donated their 1,443-acre (584 ha) estate to Michigan State University, for the formation of Michigan State University-Oakland, later renamed Oakland University. The donation included two million dollars, their contiguous mansions Meadow Brook Hall and Sunset Terrace, which now forms the Oakland University campus, and all associated collections of cultural artifacts. Covering 88,000 square feet (8,200 m2) and with 110 rooms, the Tudor-Revival style Meadow Brook Hall is the fourth largest historic mansion museum in the United States, a National Historic Landmark, and is classified as one of America’s Castles.
